David de Gea has been in excellent form this season, keeping seven clean sheets for Manchester United in 16 games in all competitions. However, uncertainty remains about the Spaniard’s future beyond this season: his contract will expire in eight months, but Manchester United have yet to activate his contract extension option in advance.
High salary and the attitude of the coach
According to the “Daily Telegraph” reporter, Mike McGrath recently reported that De Gea’s high salary of 370,000 pounds a week is one of the main reasons for Manchester United’s indecision over a contract extension. However, even if De Gea has decided to take a significant salary cut, the attitude of Manchester United coach Ten Hag will also become a major obstacle to the renewal of the Spaniard’s contract.
Lauri Whitwell understands that De Gea’s poor play from the back does not meet Ten Hag’s tactical demands, so the latter prefers to find a young goalkeeper who fits his tactical ideas, including Porto’s goalkeeper. Diogo Costa and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Diogo Costa, 23, is a key figure in Porto’s progress to the last 16 of the Champions League this season. So far this season, he has kept eight clean sheets for Porto in 15 matches in all competitions.
Unai Simon, who is currently playing for Athletic Bilbao, is another potential target for Manchester United to replace De Gea, and his excellent backcourt skills fit perfectly with Ten Hag’s tactical system. Since the start of the season, he has made 11 appearances for Bilbao, keeping four clean sheets.
